General Remarks

Peregrinatio in Terram Sanctam (title in latin) is the first printed illustrated travel book. It accurately describes and depicts the travel of Bernhard von Breydenbach and his company (3 ships in total) to the Levant and the Holy Land in the years 1483-1484. The book had a huge impact in his time and appeared in 10? incunabula editions.

Greek Connection

It describes the travel through Greece, picturing real views of Modon (Methoni), Candia (Creta) and Rhodis (Rhodes). Two textual woodcuts show Greek people in traditional dress and the Greek alphabet.
