General Remarks

It is a collection of important works about Byzantine empire, Turkey and the islamic world. The Byzantine history compilation of Hieronymus Wolf served as a foundation for all later medieval Greek histories and especially for the monumental Corpus Historiae Byzantinae in 34 volumes, ordered by King Louis XIV of France, with paralleled Greek text and Latin translation. This edition popularized the term Byzantine Empire (never used by that Empire itself during the centuries of its existence) and established it in historical studies.

Henri Estienne the elder (printer)

Henri Estienne (Henricus Stephanus) the elder (1470-1520) was a famous humanist printer and bookseller and initiated the splendid printing history of six generations of the Estiennes in the 16th cent. He first set up his press in Paris in 1505, against his father’s wishes. In this first year he printed Hermes Trismegistus among others. He was friend with some of the most learned men of the day, Guillaume Budé, Guillaume Briçonnet, Jacobus Faber Stapulensis and had Beatus Rhenanus among his proof-readers.

Henri was careful not to issue books containing printing errors. If errors were discovered too late he issued errata sheets, a practice unknown to his contemporaries.

The following table shows the family members who were printers. In parenthesis is the period of active printing.
